inform、notify、tell、report，都有「告訴別人某件事」的意思，究竟差別在哪?

1. inform 通知

inform是一般告知，或提供訊息，它可以用在「正式」或「非正式」的情境。

例句1

Please inform us of your arrival time.

(請通知我們你抵達的時間。)

inform後面，經常搭配介系詞of，形成：「inform 人 of 事情」。

2. notify 通知

notify比inform更正式，經常用在法律、商業等情境裡。

例句2

Have you notified the police?

(你已經通知警方了嗎?)

例句2，notified是過去分詞。

例句3

We were notified that the interview would be in the afternoon.

(我們被通知，面試是在下午。)

3. tell 告訴

tell是日常英文會話，經常用到的字詞。

它比inform、notify都更普遍，也更非正式。

例句4

Could you tell me how to get to the museum?

(能否告訴我，如何去博物館?)

例句4，tell用在日常生活中。

例句5

Lisa told me about her feelings.

(麗莎告訴我她的感受。)

told是過去式動詞。

4. report 報告

向上級、權威機構傳遞訊息，使用report。

例句6

He has to report on his progress to his manager.

(他必須向經理報告他的進展。)

progress (n.) 進展

此外，report也可以用在新聞報導。

The journalist reported that the flood caused damage to the area.

(記者報導，洪水對該地區造成損害。)
