despite和although都是「儘管、雖然」的意思，但用法不同。

1. despite用法

despite是「介系詞」，所以後面接名詞或V-ing。

例句1

Despite being injured, she won the Olympic medal.

(儘管受傷，她仍贏得奧運獎牌。)

例句1，despite後面接V-ing，所以寫being。

injured (adj.) 受傷的

例句2

Despite pressure from investors, the company is optimistic about its outlook.

(儘管來自投資方的壓力，公司對於前景，仍樂觀看待。)

例句2，despite是介系詞，後面接名詞「pressure(壓力)」。

investor (n.) 投資者

optimistic (adj.) 樂觀的

outlook (n.) 前景

2. in spite of用法

despite也可以換成in spite of，後面同樣是接名詞或V-ing。

例句3

In spite of the rain, restaurants are full of customers.

(儘管下雨，餐廳都客滿。)

be full of 充滿

例句3，the rain是名詞。

例句4

In spite of difficulties, they managed to finish the project on time.

(儘管有困難，他們仍設法準時完成專案。)

例句4，句子可寫成Despite difficulties, they managed to…

manage to (ph.) 設法、想辦法

3. despite the fact that用法

that後面，接子句，也就是「主詞+動詞」。

這個句型，也可以寫成in spite of the fact that。

要注意的是：

despite和in spite of，都是介系詞，後面要先接名詞「the fact(事實)」，才能接that子句。

例句5

Despite the fact that they are from different countries, they become good friends.

(儘管他們來自不同國家，他們仍然成為好朋友。)

提醒一下，逗點左側是that子句，逗點右側是句子的主要結構：They become good friends.

4. although/though用法

although和though，意思是「雖然」，都是連接詞，因此後面接「主詞+動詞」。

例句6

Although he is retired, he volunteers to share his experiences.

(雖然他退休了，但他自願分享經驗。)

retired (adj.) 退休的

volunteer (v.) 自願做~

例句7

Though the food is spicy, I enjoy it.

(雖然食物辛辣，但我很喜歡。)

spicy (adj.) 辛辣的
